Warrior Games 2027 Returns to Walt Disney World, What to Know

Walt Disney World will host the Warrior Games for the third time in August 2027, bringing nearly 200 wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex for adaptive competition. Competitors will represent all five military branches, including the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard, Air Force and Space Force, and Special Operations Command.

About the Warrior Games

The Warrior Games launched in 2010 and now cover 12 adaptive sports, including archery, cycling, swimming, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, powerlifting, and pickleball. Walt Disney World previously hosted the Games in 2022 and 2024, making 2027 the third time the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex has served as host venue.

A Preview Moment Already on Record

There's already a lead up moment tied to next year's Games. U.S. Army veteran Tony Smith was honored at a Flag Retreat ceremony in Magic Kingdom on August 6, 2026, more than a year ahead of the 2027 competition. Disney has framed its involvement as continuing a tradition that traces back to founders Walt and Roy O. Disney, both of whom served in World War I.

Why This Matters for Trip Planning

If you're local to Central Florida or already planning a 2027 visit, this is worth adding to your radar. Warrior Games events at Walt Disney World have historically been open to spectators in past years, and watching adaptive athletes compete is one of the more genuinely moving things a park trip can include, well outside the usual attraction and dining planning.

Exact August 2027 dates have not been announced yet. As details firm up closer to the event, spectator information and schedules typically get released through both Walt Disney World's official channels and the Warrior Games' own communications.

What Made Past Warrior Games at Disney World Notable

The 2022 and 2024 events at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex drew crowds well beyond the athletes' own families, with the wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball events in particular becoming some of the most attended sessions of each Games. Powerlifting and archery also tend to draw strong crowds because the venue's layout lets spectators get close to the competition floor, something that's harder to do at larger stadium hosted Warrior Games in other cities.

Walt Disney World has typically paired its hosting years with additional on property recognition moments for competitors and veterans throughout the resort, similar to the Flag Retreat ceremony held for Tony Smith this past week. Expect more of these lead up moments to surface over the next year as the 2027 Games approach, giving Central Florida visitors multiple opportunities to catch a piece of the event even outside the official competition dates.

Alright, that’s all for now. See ya next time.
