The Disney Believe Just Had Its Keel Laying Ceremony
The Disney Believe just picked up another real, visible checkpoint on its way to a late 2027 debut. Back in September, the ship's first gigablock floated out at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. Work on the second gigablock is already underway, and now the ship has reached its keel laying ceremony, a milestone that's less about engineering and more about tradition.
A New Milestone for the Disney Believe
If you've been tracking this build since the first D23 2026 reveal, you already know the pattern. Disney doesn't just let construction happen quietly in the background, it turns each real step forward into its own small moment, and this one comes with a genuinely charming detail attached.

So, What Is a Keel Laying Ceremony Anyway?
A keel is the main structural beam that runs down the center of a ship's bottom, often extending slightly below the hull itself. It's the backbone the rest of the vessel gets built around, so symbolically, laying the keel has stood in for "starting construction" for about as long as people have been building ships on purpose.
The ceremony itself traces back to ancient Greece and Rome, and the version Disney follows today is a lot older than any theme park tradition. A specially minted coin gets placed underneath the ship's keel in a short formal ritual, meant to bring the vessel good fortune for the rest of its life at sea. It's a small gesture, but it's one that's stuck around for literally thousands of years, which says something about how seriously shipbuilders take getting a new vessel off on the right foot.
For the Disney Believe, that coin features a portrait of Tinker Bell, matching the hand painted filigree work already planned for her spot on the ship's bow. Disney's own framing for the coin is pretty on brand too, describing it as giving the ship "a sprinkle of faith, trust, and pixie dust" to help future guests believe in the promise of their own dreams coming true. Corny in the best way, and honestly exactly the kind of detail that makes this ship's whole theming concept click.
When we sailed on the Maiden Voyage of the Disney Destiny each stateroom was gifted a replica keel coin used in the construction of that ship. It’s now a special keepsake that we keep on display in our home with our collection of atrium statues. We’re hoping to get another replica if we make it on the Maiden Voyage of the Disney Believe.

Construction Is Right on Track
None of this changes the big planning questions that are still unanswered. There's no confirmed homeport, itinerary, or booking window for the Disney Believe yet, so a keel laying ceremony doesn't move your actual trip timeline forward in any concrete way. What it does confirm is that construction is genuinely progressing on schedule, not just sitting as concept art and a name.
WHAT‘S A GIGABLOCK: Learn about why cruise ships are built like puzzles.
Between the first gigablock float out in September and this keel laying milestone just weeks later, the pace of visible progress has picked up noticeably. That tracks with every other Wish class ship before it. The Disney Wish, Disney Treasure, and Disney Destiny all moved through this same string of float outs and ceremonial milestones before eventually reaching their actual debut dates, so there's a real precedent for the Believe following a similar runway toward late 2027.

Why This One Is Worth Watching Closely
The timing here is what makes this update worth flagging right now rather than filing away. This milestone lands just two days before Disney Cruise Line's October 7 livestream reveal, the one expected to finally cover the ship's homeport, itineraries, and new onboard venues. A construction update by itself wouldn't normally be huge news, but paired with a major reveal event this close on the calendar, it's a good reminder that the Disney Believe news cycle is about to get a lot busier.
If you've been half paying attention to this ship since the D23 2026 reveal, now's the moment to actually start paying attention. The keel laying ceremony is a nice bit of shipbuilding tradition, but the real planning information is about to show up fast.
Alright, that’s all for now. See ya next time.
